I have a bad back. Most Americans have a bad back. Most humans, I’m guessing, have bad backs. That whole move from walking on four legs to walking on two really didn’t do us many favors. (Don’t get me started on shoulders.)
Mattresses are heavy. The average queen mattress weighs between 50 and 130 lbs (22 and 58kg). The latex mattresses are the heaviest, followed by the foam, followed by the hybrids, followed by the coil spring mattresses, which I found to be totally unintuitive. Apparently there are a lot more air holes in the ones not made of air holes.
While you certainly don’t have to pick up and carry the whole mattress to put a fitted sheet on the mattress, you generally do have to pick up the corner to slide the elastic underneath. That’s a lot of lifting and holding and wrestling a sheet. If your bed frame fits more like a box than a table, then you might have to do all that while lifting into the corner of the bed frame to do it.
It is not an exaggeration that one of the major reasons I had a house cleaner for years was because I couldn’t change the sheets without throwing my back out. It is not an exaggeration that I bought an eight inch mattress instead of a thicker one to lower the weight, and still needed the housecleaner because I couldn’t even lift that.
QuickZip sheets are really all about the fitted sheet. Imagine someone took your standard fitted sheet and cut the top off, then reattached it with a zipper. That’s it, that’s the whole product. They don’t guarantee that you’re never going to have to lift the mattress again. But since the top of the sheet is the part you’re most likely to get dirty, any time you need to change the sheets you can unzip the top (what they call the zip sheet) and change it, and leave the sides of the sheet (what they call the base) in place.
QuickZip sheets are not why I don’t have a housecleaner right now, but the fact that I have them is saving me many back aches. And since sitting in front of a computer requires my back, and a back ache makes for a bad computering (i’m keeping that word spellcheck i don’t care what you say) day, it’s a big relief.
Are they expensive? Yes, compared to Amazon Basics or something like that. Are they good solid sheets that resist wear? Based on the fact that I have two humans and two dogs sleeping on our bed and we’re all restless sleepers, I’m going with yes. Are they saving my back? Definitely. And that makes doing the bed laundry a lot more accessible to me than it was before.
